Our very own Ankole broke some records!
Cattle Group Farming’s very own Ankole cow, along with her calf, was sold for an impressive R1 million at this national auction!
Cattle Group Farming, owned by Walter Kinnear from Rustenburg, sold this prized cow to the Meintjes family of Sterkfontein Farms in Krugersdorp, located on the West Rand. The cow’s horns, a significant factor in her price, measured an impressive 117 cm in length just four months ago.
Jacques Malan, President of the Ankole Society, mentioned that this breed has gained popularity since its arrival in South Africa approximately a decade ago. The first auction for this breed was held around seven years ago, marking the beginning of its rise in prominence.
The cow that changed hands on Saturday was bred locally in South Africa, a testament to the growing success of the Ankole breed in the region. Malan also highlighted the significant growth potential for this breed, noting that buyers came not only from across South Africa but also from neighbouring countries.
“There were even buyers from Brazil, including their ambassador, as they too are in search of Ankoles,” Malan added. At the auction, 32 cows and five bulls were sold, alongside semen and embryos offered in lots. Two embryo carriers with exceptional breeding material fetched R800,000 each, contributing to the auction’s total turnover of R14.2 million. Currently, there are approximately 1,200 purebred Ankole cattle in the country, with 71 breeders spread across regions such as KwaZulu-Natal, Pongola, East London, Stellenbosch, Albertinia, the Kalahari, as well as Limpopo, Gauteng, and the Free State.
“The Ankole is a highly adaptable animal, with its greatest value lying in the tourism and lobola markets,” Malan explained. Experts compare the breed’s temperament to that of Brahman cattle, noting that “the more you work with them, the tamer they become.” This auction not only marked a significant achievement for Cattle Group Farming but also highlighted the growing interest and investment in the Ankole breed within the agricultural community. As the breed continues to gain traction, it is clear that the Ankole’s presence in South Africa will only continue to flourish.
